VATS is a minimally invasive (closed) surgical technique performed through a few small incisions. Unlike open surgery, no large incisions are needed. At the end of the procedure, one or more chest tubes may be placed in the chest cavity to drain fluid and air. The aim is to examine the chest wall and lungs under video camera guidance and to obtain tissue for diagnosis.
In principle, almost anything that can be done with open surgery can be done with VATS. However, in situations where the camera or instruments cannot reach the target area (adhesions, previous disease or previous surgery, etc.), conversion to open surgery may be necessary.
